The customer contacted DTI regarding attenuation of noise and vibration associated with resonance response of hull structure associated with luxury yachts as they traverse the water. Wave impingement excites resonances of hull plating (i.e. the panel structure) which generates unwanted noise and vibration.
The frequency content of the hull resonance response varies depending on the hull geometry, substrate material, and substrate thickness.
DTI configured a simple closed-form solution FEA Model of the aluminum hull panel test article. A DTI Stand-Off Damping System (SODS) was configured and optimized for the application.
Prototype hardware was constructed and tested. The Stand-Off Damping System delivered large attenuation (about a factor of 50.0) for the resonance response of the aluminum hull panel test article, despite the substantial thickness of the aluminum panel substrate (3/8”).
